FDA Sweetens Labeling
FDA Sweetens Labeling
The FDA is working toward adding a mandatory line for added sugars to its Nutrition Facts Label, which is not currently required on the panel. Despite the added expense and logistical difficulties, this is actually great news for manufacturers, and of course makers of the natural sweeteners those companies use to create their products like Sweet Additions. The FDA initiative adds validity to the natural food and drink industry’s mission of improving consumer health by replacing refined sugars with more healthful alternatives. Under the proposal, manufacturers with $10 million or more in annual food sales would have until January1, 2020, to come into compliance. At Sweet Additions, we say “Thank you, FDA.” Because our corn syrup replacementsand other healthful sweeteners appear to be exactly what consumers and manufacturers of healthy foods and drinks are demanding—especially when you consider that some favorite American treats are composed of a third or more sugar. But we now have the ability to modify the sugar profile of our low sugar glucose syrupsand tapioca syrups, for example, by up to 40% using no acids or chemicals in the process—only enzyme technology—without reducing sweetness. This new manufacturing process promotes the production of glucose (dextrose), with its higher sweetness index versus the less-sweet-tasting maltose often seen in competitors’ ingredients. Plus, our low sugar syrupsretain many of the functional attributes of traditional enzyme hydrolyzed syrups, and are quite stable under high heat for cooking or manufacturing purposes. Our maltodextrins, available with DE levels from 3 to 16, are another highly versatile ingredient that can be used in a variety of related applications. They provide excellent functional properties including good solubility, bulking and binding. They are nonhygroscopic, inhibit crystal growth, carry flavor, have a low browning tendency, and are a great carbohydrate source. While labeling changes by the FDA can be costly and complicated for food manufacturers, they’re implemented for good reason, and at Sweet Additions, we’re in your corner to help you make those changes.
